Mount Promotional Video Class Features CICU Award Winner Ciara Rosa ’15

Riverdale, N.Y. – When Ciara Rosa, a senior from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, joined nine other exceptional students in Albany, N.Y. for the inaugural Independent Sector Student Community Service Awards Reception on March 2, 2015, her achievement marked a first for the Mount and for the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu). The Commission established the new award in part to demonstrate how volunteerism and community engagement are emblematic of an independent education.
To highlight the accomplishments of the student winners, the Commission solicited videos of each student—all of whom had received scholarships from the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)—to highlight their community service contributions. The aim was to showcase these videos of achievement on the New York Student Aid Alliance website and on the Commission’s YouTube channel. And in another first, College of Mount Saint Vincent students answered the call.
The result was a five-minute video produced by 15 students enrolled in a promotional video course under the guidance of Vincent LoBue, an adjunct professor in the Department of Communication. The video focuses on how TAP helped Ms. Rosa meet her college expenses, why programs like TAP need more state funding, and how faculty and programs at the Mount have supported and enhanced her college experience, and relates some of Ms. Rosa’s most memorable experiences while volunteering. The video students handled every aspect of the production, from writing questions for each interview and preparing sets, to filming interviews and “B-roll,” to the long hours of editing with music, titles, and credits.
“When we started this class, I wanted the students to have an experience of working with a ‘client’ on a project that would simulate the real world of promotional video production,” said Mr. LoBue. “The experience would not only benefit the client—the College of Mount Saint Vincent—but would also benefit the students. They really made it their own and did a great job. It’s something these students can really be proud of, and will be a highlight of their portfolios as they move forward in their careers.”
