Assistant Director for Academic Resource Center and Office of Disabilities Services

The College of Mount Saint Vincent is an academically excellent, authentically inclusive, Catholic and ecumenical liberal arts college with approximately 1,500 undergraduate students and 300 graduate students, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, New York City. Job Description
The successful candidate for Assistant Director (AD), Academic Resource Center (ARC) and Office of Disabilities Services (ODS) will assist in leading the development, management, and delivery of tutoring and other academic-focused services that accommodate and support CMSV undergraduate students’ learning.

The Assistant Director will be a highly self-motivated and solution-oriented team-player in working with the director to simultaneously manage the workflow and day-to-day operations of both ARC and ODS. The Assistant Director is expected to be a campus-wide collaborator and contributor of the College’s larger network of academic support services to facilitate students’ learning and thereby contribute to increasing retention and graduation rates.

General Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small group writing tutoring across all disciplines and levels
  • Develop, plan, and facilitate academic support workshops and other presentations
  • Collaborate with faculty and special programs to promote, consult, design, and implement tutoring and creative academic support services
  • Monitor virtual tutoring sessions, provide technical support to students, and coach professional and peer tutors during and after sessions as needed
  • Assist with tutor supervision, recruitment, hiring, training, and scheduling
  • Work with the director to create, manage and continuously evaluate tutoring programming designs, including on-line and in-person platforms, software systems, internal and third-party tutoring options, student satisfaction, costs, and effective procedural task-flows
  • Guide students through the tutoring process; consult 1:1 with students to address learning needs and writing contracts; identify study skills and academic challenges; offer customized individual study/ tutoring plans and study skill strategies
  • Work with the director to review disabilities documentation; identify reasonable and appropriate accommodations in compliance with ADA
  • Provide ongoing 1:1 support to students with disabilities and coordinate accommodation services
  • Support and consult with faculty and students in the implementation of course related accommodations and resolve issues. Serve as a liaison between the College community (faculty, administration, students, and parents) on matters related to academic support, ADA legal understanding, and the implementation of accommodation services
  • Assist director in the development and implementation of procedures and policies in compliance with ADA legal guidelines and adherence to College’s policies
  • Create and manage the circulation of manuals, academic support information, and marketing materials
  • Document and manage confidential student records, service data, and other documents
  • Participate in College-wide events such as Orientation, Early Action Day, Accepted Students Day
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • One to three years of experience in academic support or other teaching experience
  • Master’s degree preferred in education related fields: teaching, counseling, higher education, psychology, or related adult learning fields
  • Proficient communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Proficient in the college writing process (academic, research, and professional)
  • Familiar with learning and tutoring pedagogy in adult learners preferred
  • Experience in coordinating or managing educational services
  • Experience working with college students in higher education or academic environments
  • Ability to have a general understanding of individual educational plans (IEP), educational-evaluation reports, diagnostic tests, and other external professional reports preferred
  • Familiar with and/or general understanding of learning disabilities and other medical/ clinical conditions preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sensitivity to diverse cultural, disability, range of learning levels, and other characteristics of college students
  • Must be able to interpret government, legal guidelines, and have solid judgment and discernment when addressing disability issues and applying disability related laws including, but not limited to ADA
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Ability to learn and proficiently use other college-wide software database systems, online internal and external software tutoring platforms, and assistive technology learning tools
