Teaching

The candidate for Tenure must demonstrate “Proficiency in Teaching,” with evidence of continued growth as a teacher.  The candidate simultaneously applying for Promotion to Associate Professor must additionally demonstrate “Excellence as a College Teacher”

  1. Successful performance in teaching assignments, including effective course structure, communication and classroom management skills
  2. Evolution of teaching strategies and continued responsiveness to changing student skills, motivations and needs, as well as goals for future development
  3. Willingness to experiment, evaluate and adapt various teaching methods as needed in the classroom, including use of creative teaching strategies (AP)
  4. Commitment to meeting the needs of his or her students (AP)
  5. Ability to motivate students, organize and communicate complex material; (AP)
  6. Responsiveness to changes in the discipline and pedagogy
  7. Ability to work with his or her colleagues in developing new courses or revision of existing ones (AP)
  8. Fairness in setting standards for and evaluating student achievement

The following documents should be discussed within your narrative and included in your evidence file in order to provide support for your claims.

  1. Recent syllabi and other instructional handouts demonstrating
  2. Teaching and evaluation instruments (tests, paper assignments, portfolios, etc.)
  3. Grade distribution records
  4. Evaluations across a range of upper and lower divisions courses by department chair, faculty colleagues, and students
