1.3 Qualifications for Appointment to Rank
1.3.1 Instructor: To be appointed to the rank of Instructor, a candidate must present evidence of adequate training and preparation in the discipline in which he/she will be assigned. Instructors must have earned at least a Master’s degree in the subject area they will teach. Candidates must give evidence of their intention to achieve the doctorate within a reasonable time. An Instructor must provide evidence of an inclination to develop in areas of teaching and scholarship as well as display behavior consistent with expected of a teacher and an advisor of students.
1.3.2 Assistant Professor: The candidate must have completed the doctorate in his/her field and present evidence of developing competence earned through professional experience in higher education. Ordinarily, an appointment is made to the rank the candidate held at the previous institution. Exceptions can only be made by the Provost/Dean of Faculty.
1.3.3 Associate Professor: Initial appointment may be made as Associate Professor if he or she has served as a faculty member in an institution of higher education with the rank of Associate Professor.
1.3.4 Professor: An initial appointment to the rank of Professor is only made under exceptional circumstances.
