Professor McLean has a long history working primarily in the mental health field. She began as a staff art therapist and over the years progressed to the positions of primary therapist, clinical supervisor, program director, and administrative director for a child and adolescent department overseeing at one time, eight programs.

She currently works at a mental health clinic as a clinical supervisor. Her work experience includes children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly, in both chronic and acute settings, inpatient and outpatient. Her experience encompasses both short-term and long-term therapy treatment and interventions utilizing the techniques of art therapy.
