1.0 Introduction

We are pleased to present our Employee Manual. This Employee Manual applies to all employees of the College. Separate supplements at the back of this manual apply specifically to members of the Administration, Staff and Security employees. In addition, a separate Faculty Handbook pertains to Members of the Faculty only. The policies stated in this Manual are guidelines only which provide information about benefits, policies and regulations concerning your employment at the College. It is the College’s present intention to continue the practices, benefits and policies described in this Manual. However, nothing in this Manual is intended to create a binding obligation, and the College reserves the right to add, modify or eliminate any practice, benefit or policy. The College will notify you of any policy change in advance of its effective date. All updates, changes or modifications to this Manual or any existing policy are available online on the Human Resources web page.

Certain of the benefits that are described generally in the Manual, such as insurance policies, are set out in detail in official documents. These documents are the controlling documents and prevail entirely over any statement in the Manual. The controlling documents are available for inspection at the Human Resources Department.

We encourage you to also read other publications including The College Catalogue and Student Manual, in particular, which govern the students’ experience at the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

This Manual is not a contract, express or implied, guaranteeing employment for any specific duration. Although we hope that your employment relationship with us will be long term, either you or the College may terminate this relationship at any time, for any reason, with or without cause or notice, except for employees covered under the Faculty Handbook, who are referred to the Faculty Handbook and any other applicable contracts or agreements entered into between them and the College. Please understand that no supervisor, manager, or representative of the College other than myself has the authority to enter into any agreement with you for employment for any specified period of time or to make any promises or commitments contrary to the foregoing. Further, any employment agreement entered into by me shall not be enforceable unless it is in a formal written agreement and signed by you and me. Upon commencement of your employment, you will receive a letter of appointment from your department manager, outlining the parameters of your employment. The letter of appointment does not change the at-will nature of your employment.

Please direct any comments, concerns or questions you may have to the Human Resources Department.

Thank you for your dedication and service to the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
